Collection management incorporates many practical aspects of a librarian’s role and it is an area with which I have little experience. The more I learned about collection management through this course, the more I appreciated how much I didn’t actually know. Effective TLs have a rich professional knowledge of library and information management (ALIA & ASLA, 2004). I know I can be confident in achieving this when I am in the role. I have been given a broad understanding of this knowledge through the course and due to the practical experiences at my placement, I know that I will develop effectiveness the more I learn. It is therefore imperative that my learning continues. I will continue to ensure the library policies and procedures link with users’ needs and the mission of the school (ALIA & ASLA, 2004). I will need to design a collection development policy that will effectively aid me in selecting, acquiring, evaluating and weeding to make the collection relevant and useful (Kennedy, 2006). I intend to select resources through useful collaboration with staffa nd students (ALIA & ASLA). I will use successful evidence-based methods to analyse user needs (ALIA & ASLA, 2004). When library staff have an intimate knowledge of user needs, they are more effective in providing a rich learning environment (ALIA & ASLA). A user centred approach is at the heart of making the library as relevant today as it was in the past (Casey & Savastinuk, 2006). To truly build Library 2.0, I need to be open to new ideas and new technologies. I need to not only be informed about using Web 2.0, including social media, in the library, but be a user myself (Miller, 2005). A TL who educates others to new ideas through enthusiasm and developing a supportive information –rich learning environment is an effective one (ALIA & ASLA, 2004).
